2016 Reading Program

Time: Library hours

The Miami-Dade Public Library System invites you to get into the game this summer -- the reading game, that is. Just stop by your local library to register and pick up a summer reading program game board to keep track of the hours you read. Every trip around the board is equivalent to eight hours of reading. You'll receive one entry ticket for the prize drawing for every hour you read or listen to a book. You may also receive an entry ticket for attending any library event.

Cost: Free

Everyone from preschool children to adults is invited to explore all things sports and reach reading goals. Free events and programs include fitness events and classes, science and engineering experiments, movies, cooking demonstrations and more. Win prizes by completing and tracking your reading goals.

The Village Flea Market

Sixth Annual Book bag & School Supplies Giveaway

Time: Noon to 4 p.m.  

It's time to think about the new school year and those school supplies. The Village Flea Market is hosting its sixth annual book bag and school supplies giveaway. The event will take place inside the venue's second-floor fun zone. There will be free food and games for kids.

Operation Homefront Back-to-School Brigade

The families of junior enlisted military personnel and of wounded warriors can receive backpacks and essential school items courtesy of Operation Homefront. There's a limited quantity of items, so families who need supplies must sign up before the event.

Casting for Cancer Fishing Tournament

The Casting for Cancer Fishing Tournament will feature three age divisions, beginning at 5 years old, raffles and a grand prize of a bass fishing trip. You will need to bring your own pole and lures. No live bait.

Miccosukee Indian Village & Airboat Rides

Just 30 minutes west of Miami-Dade County, experience how the Miccosukee Indian Tribe existed and still exists in "The Heart of the Florida Everglades." Visit the Miccosukee Indian Village and let experienced guides take you on a tour of the tribe's history, culture and lifestyle. See a variety of demonstrators and displays from woodcarving to patchwork, beadwork, basket weaving and doll making.  By airboat, you can take a ride through the vast "River of Grass" and discover a typical hammock-style Indian camp that has been owned by the same Miccosukee family for more than 100 years. Take in the charm, splendor and romance of an untouched, protected environment featuring native plants, alligators, birds and other species of wildlife in their natural habitat.
