Day of Giving effort collects about 11,000 pounds of donations

7 organizations benefit from third annual Day of Giving event

PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. – The Local 10 News' third annual Day of Giving collected some 11,000 pounds of donations on Friday.

Local 10 News teamed up with Publix Super Markets to collect non-perishable food and new-and-unwrapped toys. And the Make-A-Wish Veterans Program joined the effort this year.

Among this year's donors was former Miami Dolphins player Adewale Ogunley, who showed up with a cart full of food.

"People who have stuff who have worked hard for it and God has blessed them, I think it is their duty to give back," Ogunley said. "There are so many people in this world who need a hand."

There were also some $3,000 in cash donations. The donations will benefit seven charitable agencies in South Florida.

Aside from the Make-A-Wish Veterans Program, donations will also go to  Edible Extras, Farm Share, Joshua's Heart, Manna-Share-A-Meal, Miami Rescue Mission and Broward Outreach Centers and Star of the Sea Outreach Mission.

In the last two years, Local 10 News viewers have donated more than 30,000 pounds of food, hundreds of toys and thousands of dollars in donations to nonprofits serving the homeless and poor.
