Some Broward schools fail to post updated cafeteria inspections online

State law requires inspections to be posted

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – State law requires cafeteria inspections to be posted on a school's website for all parents to see.

But in some cases that's not happening.

Parents were caught off guard outside of Liberty Elementary School in Margate when, at the end of August, the school received an "unsatisfactory" on its food service inspection report.

Rodent droppings and dead bugs were found in a food storage room in the school.

"I'm disgusted about this," a parent said. "My son eats the cafeteria food."

This information is required to be posted on the school's website.

But the latest inspection posted on Liberty's website is from February, and it was a satisfactory report. There was no mention of roaches and rodent issues.

It's not the only school with a lack of information posted online.

Quiet Water Elementary School in Deerfield Beach, Crystal Lake Middle School in Pompano Beach and Sunland Park Academy in Fort Lauderdale have had unsatisfactory cafeteria inspections recently.

But the school's websites didn't reflect the problems weeks after those inspections.

At Sunland Park Academy, the principal came out but couldn't tell Local 10 News why the information had not been updated.

"I'll come back out, if I can, to speak with you," Principal Sharonda Bailey said.

Tracy Clark, the school district's spokeswoman, said that the information is "important."

"I would say that we all can, you know, engage in continuous improvement," Clark said.

In November, Local 10 News confronted the district with the same issue.

After an unsatisfactory inspection, schools are re-inspected after issues are cleaned up.

A source said that school's often wait for that satisfactory re-inspection and then post that report -- not the original unsatisfactory report.

"I believe that our school leaders work really, really hard," Clark said. "Our school staff work really, really hard to adhere to all the guidelines."
