50 students join New World Symphony for Saturday concert

SoundScape Park's Wallcast features admission free viewing tonight

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – The New World Symphony chose 50 students to perform during Saturday evening's Side-by-Side concert with Grammy Award-winning artist Michael Tilson Thomas and the symphony fellows. 

The program includes "Rossini: Overture to Smiramide," "Walton: Viola Concerto," "Debussy: Nocturnes"  and "Tchaikovsky: Suite from Swan Lake."

Among the students in grades 7 to 12 are three from Brazil and five from Colombia. 

Five music students from Colombia will be playing in Miami Beach on Saturday night.

The students from Colombia's city of Medellin are Laura Rendon, Cristian Alvarez,  Jhair Murillo, Camila Adarve and Laura Olarte. Redon plays the oboe, Alvarez plays the trumpet, Murillo plays the trombone, Adarve plays the violin and Olarte plays the viola.

Maressa Neves de Souza and Renato dos Santos are from Sao Paulo and Nathalia Barbosa is from Aruja. Neves de Souza plays the violin, Dos Santos plays percussion and Barbosa plays the violoncelo. 

Barbosa said the concert was "a great opportunity, because it’s not only for me, but an inspiration for my musician friends in Brazil."

Although the show tickets sold out, their 8 p.m. performance will be shown for free at the SoundScape Park's Wallcast on 17 Street and Washington Avenue.
