Rock and roll may not get much airplay on the radio these days, but it was still alive and kicking when Grace Potter and The Nocturnals played the Fillmore Miami Beach at Jackie Gleason Theater on Saturday, February 16th!

Formed in Vermont, the band combines blues, rock and an electric stage presence in the form of their singer into an amazing live show!

Grace Potter is a multi-instrumentalist; playing electric and acoustic guitars in addition to singing lead and playing keyboards.  Most of her band can also play other instruments; at one point the bass player was on keyboards and one of the guitarists was on the bass!

The band certainly didn't disappoint the crowd at the Fillmore Miami Beach on Saturday night!  A mix of young and old, everyone was dancing to the hard charging music coming from the stage!

And what a great venue the old Gleason Theater is to see live music!  The orchestra pit was open for general admission, so if you wanted to go down and get up close to the band you could!  If you wanted to take a break and grab a seat, there were plenty available!

The opening act was Future Birds from Athens, Georgia.  They had a country rock thing going on; it reminded me of Band of Horses or The Thrills.  They were also able to pull a good crowd; despite being unbilled and going on early.

It really is remarkable that a band like GP and The Nocturnals, who have been playing and touring for more than a decade, haven't become a bigger band than they already are!   But they are focused on playing and pleasing their fans, rather than coming up with a formulaic radio hit.  If you get the chance to see them live, you will definitely have a great time!
