My Morning Jacket Rocks Fillmore Miami Beach

Jam fans were dancing in the aisles of the Fillmore Miami Beach at Jackie Gleason Theater on Monday night as My Morning Jacket blew away the crowd with a great set, mixing songs from their new album "The Waterfall" with MMJ classics!

It was an easy, relaxed vibe outside the historic venue before the concert, with fans able to walk right up and buy a ticket without waiting in a long line. The band continues to gain in popularity, but somehow still manages to fly under the radar.

The opening act, Mini Mansions, was well-received by the enthusiastic crowd, which ranged in age from teenagers to experienced concert veterans. Mini Mansions is formed by Zach Dawes on bass, Michael Shuman from Queens of the Stone Age on vocals, drums and guitar, and Tyler Parkford on vocals and keyboards. They had the crowd grooving to their dance-oriented rock.

After a short break to switch between bands, My Morning Jacket took over the stage, opening with their huge hit "Circuital."  MMJ ran a tight show, with lots of upbeat rocking numbers and very little stage banter in between songs. Frontman Jim James did take a moment to speak to the audience later in the set, mentioning the band's trip that afternoon to the nearby Holocaust Memorial and encouraging everyone to visit it and to spread more love and understanding in the world.

The Jacket played a wide selection of songs from throughout their career, including several from their new album "The Waterfall." Highlights for me included "I'm Amazed," "Wordless Chorus," "It Beats For You" and "Off The Record."

MMJ also brought it strong with the encore -- a four song mini-set made up of "Victory Dance," the insanely great new "Compound Fracture," "Evil Urges" and the awesome "Gideon!"

The merchandise table was packed after the show, with fans snapping up T-shirts and other band memorabilia, most of it reasonably priced considering how much some acts are now charging for their merch. It's nice to see a band these days keeping costs down for their fans.

It was a great night of great tunes at one of South Florida's premier venues for live music. Don't miss your next chance to see My Morning Jacket Live or get to experience a show at the Fillmore Miami Beach!
