Pitbull performs at Norwegian Escape christening ceremony

Norwegian Escape to be largest ship to homeport year-round in Miami

MIAMI ā€“ Miami-based music sensation Pitbull performed at Norwegian's "christening ceremony" Monday for its Escape ship at PortMiami.

Pitbull, whose real name is Armando Christian Perez, was named the honorary Godfather of the Norwegian Escape, which will be the largest ship to homeport year-round in Miami.

Cruise lines officials said it is a longstanding tradition in the maritime world to name a Godparent for a new ship. The tradition dates back to the 1800s and is bestowed upon a person who officials names and christens the ship.

Norwegian Cruise Line CEO Frank Del Rio and Norwegian President Andy Stuart will also take part in Monday's ceremony.

"Pitbull has been an excellent partner and great friend to Norwegian Cruise Line," Stuart said. "A Miami native, he epitomizes and contributes to the energy, excitement and local flavor that our ships so proudly embody and we're excited to build upon our relationship and have him serve in this special role as Godfather to Norwegian Escape."

The ship promises to offer a variety of innovative dining venues and entertainment options.
