A fall during a photo shoot may have led to the death of a popular supermodel.

Katie May, 34, died Thursday, just days after suffering what the L.A. County Medical Examiner-Coroner's office called a catastrophic stroke.

But it's what possibly led to the stroke that has turned the story into a larger mystery.

A popular model on both on Instagram and in Playboy, May had previously complained on Twitter about injuring her neck after a fall during a photo shoot the previous week.

"Pinched a nerve in my neck on a photoshoot and got adjusted this morning. It really hurts!" TMZ says May tweeted out on Jan. 29.

But instead of a pinched nerve, the gossip website says May's family believes the model tore the carotid artery in her neck during the fall, leading to the stroke.

May, who leaves behind a 7-year-old daughter, was taken off life support on Thursday, three days after suffering the stroke.

With millions of followers on various Internet and mobile apps, May was one of the most popular models in cyberspace, leading Playboy to dub her the "Queen of Snapchat."
