New trauma center opens at Jackson South Community Hospital

Miami-Dade County's newest trauma center services southern residents

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. ā€“ The doors to the newest trauma center in Miami-Dade County opened Wednesday.

Jackson South Community Hospital gives patients in the southern portion of the county a closer option when faced with an emergency.

"What this means is we're bringing the Ryder (Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital) expertise, which is world-class, down to the south end," Dr. Nicholas Namias told Local 10 News.

It's a full-service, around-the-clock trauma center with cutting-edge resources. The trauma bays are housed inside Jackson South's renovated emergency room, giving easy access to paramedics.

Luis Derosa said it will have a big impact for residents in the southern reaches of the county.

"They're going to have access to, pretty much, almost like a Ryder Trauma Center, but here in the south," the nurse said.

The medical staff will be led by expert trauma surgeons from the University of Miami Health System, including specialty physicians.
