Jackson South's new trauma center will serve the needs of southern Miami-Dade County residents.

Operated by Jackson Health System, the hospital will be equipped to handle trauma alerts like its neighbor to the north, Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital.

"For more than two decades, Jackson has been synonymous with providing unmatched trauma care, and now we are expanding our footprint into south Miami-Dade, an area that has seen tremendous growth," Carlos A. Migoya, president and CEO of Jackson Health System, said in a statement. "More lives will undoubtedly be saved because of the new trauma center at Jackson South."

The new trauma center at Jackson South will be equipped to handle air rescues. Currently, gunshot victims and other victims who require air rescue have to be flown to either Jackson Memorial Hospital or Kendall Regional Medical Center.

Jackson South's new trauma center will open Wednesday.
