MIAMI – Community leaders gathered Thursday to kick-off the annual "No More Stray Bullets" campaign.
For the past several years, this campaign has been raising awareness about the danger of shooting off guns during holiday celebrations.
In 1997, 5-year-old Rickia Isaac was killed by a stray bullet during a Martin Luther King Jr. celebration.
"Too many kids' lives have been lost by unfriendly gunfire," said Rev. Jerome Starling. "We don't need more unfriendly gunfire in our community."
Law enforcement officials are also taking part in the campaign. They will pass out hundred of flyers reminding people about the county gun bounty program.
Anyone who provides police with information about an illegal gun can receive up to a $1,000 reward.
"If you fail to call that might be the bullet that killed somebody. If you do call maybe we can save a life," said Miami police chief Manny Orosa.
About 600 weapons have been taken off the street since 2008.
