PLANTATION, Fla. ā€“ A bicyclist was hit and killed Monday morning in Plantation.

According to the Plantation Fire Department, a driver hit the bicyclist in the area of West Sunrise Blvd and North University Drive.

The driver, who identified himself only as Fernando, told Local 10 News reporter Layron Livingston that he didn't see the bicyclist.

"He appears...nowhere. I mean, (out of) the darkness," Fernando said. "I don't know why he was in the middle of the street."

Local 10 News has learned that Fernando is a truck driver who was on his way to work before the sun came up. He said he had the green light while driving south on University Drive.

The victim has been identified by authorities as Larry Cumbie, 72, of Plantation.

The driver was not charged in the fatal crash.

"It was an accident," Fernando said. "I don't know."
