1 dead after falling into hole at Pembroke Park construction site

Man falls about 23 feet, buried in dirt, gravel

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – A worker is dead after falling into a hole at a construction site in Pembroke Park.

It happened about 1 p.m. Friday near Hallandale Beach Boulevard and Interstate 95.

Broward Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Gina Carter said the man fell about 23 feet into the trench and was buried alive in dirt and gravel.

"Two workers jumped in to try to rescue him," Carter said. "They realized they couldn't rescue him."

Sky 10 was above the scene as rescuers were digging through mud in a deep hole to find the worker.

Rescuers eventually discovered an arm buried in the mud, checked for a pulse and soon brought a yellow tarp to cover the body.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. His body was finally removed from the hole about 4:30 p.m.

Detectives are investigating how the man fell into the hole. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is also investigating.

The identity of the victim has not been released.
