1 killed in northwest Miami-Dade shooting

Victim pronounced dead at scene

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – One person was killed Wednesday in a shooting in northwest Miami-Dade County, detectives told Local 10 News reporter Derek Shore.

The shooting was reported in the area of Northwest 24th Avenue and 61st Street.

Sky 10 was above the scene shortly after 1:30 p.m. and saw a tarp covering the body, which had a scooter lying next to it.

A Miami-Dade police representative said the victim is a black male who was found with multiple gunshot wounds.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

"I heard about four or five bang, bang, bang, bang, and I said, 'Oh lord,'" Annie Atkins, who lives in the area said. "I could have been caught up in that gunfire if I wouldn't have hesitated on the other side. I hesitated on the other side after I heard the shots and then made it to my house."

Atkins, who is also the great-grandmother of a 6-year-old boy who was killed nearby last month, said shootings are happening too often in the area.

"It's no one, no where by yourself, because I don't know if they're going to return home," King Carter's aunt LaShawn Atkins said. "Just like King didn't return home just to go get some candy."

Police said King was shot while walking to the store to buy candy last month after he got caught in the crossfire of several teenagers who were feuding about a social media post.

The identity of the latest shooting victim has not been released.
