1-year-old dies after left inside car outside Pinecrest home

Baby breathing when authorities arrived, police say

PINECREST, Fla. – A 1-year-old boy who was left inside a car Monday outside a Pinecrest home died on Tuesday, Miami-Dade police said.

Police said the child, identified as Samuel J. Schnall, had been left inside a blue Toyota Camry at Southwest 77th Avenue and 124th Terrace for more than an hour.

"Our community, all of Pinecrest, is devastated by this, and I just hope that they survive this as a family. I can't even fathom what this family is going through," neighbor Peter Casablanca said.

Police said the baby was breathing when authorities arrived.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue transported Samuel to Baptist Hospital in critical condition, but he would not survive.

It is unclear who discovered the boy or whether charges will be filed.

"This is an unfortunate situation for every family member involved, as well as the police department," Jennifer Capote, of Miami-Dade police said.

The Florida Department of Children and Families has opened an investigation into the child's death.

"We are devastated to hear that the child passed away today and (we) will continue to investigate and assist the family in any way possible as they grieve this loss," DCF spokeswoman Jessica K. Sims said in a statement. "The family has no prior involvement with the child welfare system."
