Miami police have arrested a chemistry student in connection with a chemical explosion that forced the evacuation of more than 150 residents of the Blue Lagoon Condominiums on Tuesday morning.

Police arrested 23-year-old Itai Polatnick on Wednesday morning after several hours of questioning. He is charged with failure to properly store hazardous materials.

Polatnick, a student at Florida State University, is no stranger to police.

In 2003, Polatnick was arrested and charged with possessing bomb-making materials, but the charges were later dropped.

Miami fire-rescue spokesman Ignatius Carroll said the explosion occurred at about 6 a.m. in a unit on the seventh floor of the building, located at 5085 N.W. Seventh St., but there was no fire.

"That explosion did cause severe damage to the wall, basically blowing a hole in the wall into the living room area," Carroll said.

Carroll said a refrigerator in that unit had several glass bottles inside with chemicals inside. It's not clear what those chemicals were, but the bomb squad and federal agents were investigating.

According to residents, Polatnick was renting a bedroom in the unit to a couple who was sleeping at the time of the explosion.

They weren't hurt and said they had no idea how the chemicals got there, adding that they hadn't seen Polatnick in a few weeks.

The vapors caused the sprinkler system to go off, flooding the seventh floor.

Residents were allowed back into the building Wednesday only to retrieve pets and personal items. It was not clear when they would be allowed to return permanently.

A trench was being dug on the eastside of the complex where investigators planned to dispose of the remaining chemicals.

Polatnick was expected in bond court Wednesday afternoon, when investigators were expected to ask the judge to set his bond as high as $1 million.
