MIAMI -- An explosion on Thursday caused a fire that engulfed two buildings in an apartment complex at 550 N.W. 17th St., according to reports.Reports of an explosion at the Tower Park Plaza Apartments came in shortly before noon Thursday. A gas explosion may have been the cause of the fire.Local 10 learned that four children were injured in the fire. Two girls, ages 17 and 9, and two boys, ages 12 and 10, are being treated at Jackson Memorial Hospital for varying degrees of burns, according to Local 10. A witness said one of the boys was hanging out of a window screaming for help.
Detective Delrish Moss of Miami police department said that two good Samaritans pulled the children out of the home.A firefighter was also injured after falling 15 feet off of a ladder and he was transported also to Jackson Memorial Hospital. A second firefighter was hospitalized for smoke inhalation.Plumes of thick black smoke could be seen from the sky near downtown Miami.A former employee of Local 10 said he was driving on Interstate 395 when he heard an "enormous explosion" and then saw ashes fall on his car.The roof of at least one building had completely burned down.
