Confusion Clouds Standoff At Miramar Home

Woman Says She Was Home Alone, Never Called 911

A believed standoff at a Miramar home was described as a misunderstanding by the woman who lived there and claimed there was no such incident, Local 10's Yvonne Nava reported Tuesday.

The believed 43-year-old victim, Vali Simmons, said she and her estranged husband had a domestic dispute last week and that he was staying at a hotel when the incident at 6206 S.W. 23rd St. took place.

More than four hours into the believed standoff, SWAT team members fired concussion grenades and tear gas into the home, hoping to draw out a subject who was never there.

Simmons told police she was home alone and never made the 911 call that prompted the ordeal, Nava reported.

About 6 a.m., police received a 911 call placed from the house. When responding officers arrived, they noticed the door to the house was open.

"The officer could observe from the outside of the house that there was an empty rifle case inside of the house," Miramar police Detective Yessina Diaz said. "There was also some rounds on the floor that he could see from the outside of the house."

Surrounding homes were evacuated for safety reasons while the SWAT team was called in.

About two hours into the believed standoff, Simmons walked out of house, apparently oblivious to what was going on. She claimed she was sleeping in an efficiency room adjacent to the house throughout the incident, and police said it was possible she was under the influence of something, Nava reported.

Her 47-year-old husband, Jay Wesley Simmons, appeared and claimed he was at a hotel the entire time. He was handcuffed, questioned and released after his wife provided an alibi.

Police said they retrieved as many as six guns from the house, but no arrests were made.
