HOMESTEAD, Fla. -- A woman was killed during a police involved shooting and her teenage son is being charged for his involvement in her slaying, according to the Miami-Dade police department.
The incident unfolded Friday night around 10:18 p.m. when officers from the Homestead Police Department said they observed a robbery in progress. As the officers attempted to apprehend the robbers, they fled in an SUV and a police pursuit ensued.
The vehicle came to a stop in the area of 303rd Street and Old Dixie Highway, according to police. It was there that police confronted them and that's when police said shots were fired and the woman was killed.
Pearl Simmons, 50, who was a passenger in the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene and three other people were taken to a local hospital.
Simmons' 17-year-old son Jeffrey Tamayo was driving the vehicle. He is being charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder of a police officer and one count of second- degree felony murder in the death of his mother.
Another passenger, German Perez, 18, was arrested and charged with one count of second-degree felony murder in the death of Simmons and one count of attempted robbery. The third passenger, a 17-year-old male, is not being charged.
Pablo Zavala, Simmons' brother-in-law, told Local 10 the woman had been in trouble with the law before.
"They will run away from the police, but they will not shoot at police," said Zavala.
Zavala said Simmons, her son and two other men had been at his home before the incident.
Zavala told Local 10 that Simmons was a troubled mother running away from the law.
"They should have just stayed at home the way they were told and none of this would have happened," said Zavala.
Detective Alvaro Zabaleta with the Miami-Dade police said the incident is under investigation, so Local 10 was unable to obtain who fired shots and who was armed. Zabaleta said that information is not going to be released at this time.
Homestead police have placed two officers on administrative leave. According to police policy, anytime a police officer is involved in a shooting, they are put automatically on a five-day leave, Local 10 reported.
No officers were injured in the incident.
