7-Year-Old Attacked By Pit Bull In West Park

Animal Control Waited Days To Remove Dog

POSTED: Tuesday, December 18, 2007

A 7-year-old boy is recovering after he was attacked by a pit bull, and his mother said it took Animal Control officers days to do something about it.

"A chunk of my child's shoulder is missing," Angel Germain said while showing off her son's injuries. "His ribs are bruised up and punctured. He has scratch marks all over the back of his head."

The young mother is reeling about the pit bull attack on her son, also named Angel.

"Every time I got up, he bit me and I kicked him in the stomach and then he bit me even harder," the 7-year-old said in describing the attack.

The injuries were enough to keep him home from school all week.

His mother said she believes the dog escaped from under a fence across the street and into the Pembroke Gardens apartment complex where her son and friends were playing. That was Friday. It took Animal Control officers until Monday to remove the dog from its home.

Animal Control investigators said they didn't have anybody to go to the home and file a bite report. Nobody at the home would talk to Local 10, but investigators said the dog's owner is cooperating.

The pit bull is 7 months old and has no shots. Animal Control investigators fined the owner $800 for not having the dog vaccinated and for the attack.

But Germain said that isn't enough. She said all pit bulls should be banned in Broward County as they are in Miami-Dade County.

"Someone has to do something about it and I'm not going to rest until my child and everyone else in Broward County is protected from these pit bulls," she said. "These animals can not be tamed."

The dog was being held at an Animal Control facility on a 10-day quarantine. Since there have been no prior complaints about the dog, it could be released back to its owner.
