A man at a party died early Friday morning after he became "combative" and police used a Taser gun to subdue him.

According to Miami-Dade police, a security guard was called to the University Inn condominiums, 1280 S. Alhambra Circle, in response to a party at the complex about 2 a.m. Police said a man, later identified as Xavier Jones, 29, of Opa-Locka, came out of the complex and confronted the security guard. An altercation ensued and spilled out onto the sidewalk along U.S Highway 1, according to police.

"He was just yelling stuff that didn't make sense, just jumping around," witness Nela Cano said.

A short while later, Coral Gables police officers responded and used a Taser gun to take him into custody.

"He was combative, belligerent (and) very aggressive with the officers," Miami-Dade police Detective Carlos Maura said.

The man began to suffer from an unknown medical episode and paramedics were called, Maura said. He was taken to Doctor's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

"I'm sad for my son because he loves his father. He loves his father and I don't know how I'm going to explain this to him," said Causha Holt, Jones' ex-girlfriend.

Jones' mother, Pamela Jones Stafford, said her son was on the telephone with his brother during the commotion.

"He was saying that they are trying to kill me. They are doing stuff to me and he heard him in the background screaming and he also heard the police saying get on the ground," said Stafford.

A portion of U.S. 1 was closed near the University of Miami campus as a result of the incident.

Local 10 confirmed that Jones was not a student at UM.

The officer who deployed the Taser gun has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

"It's never justified not murder. Murder's never justified," said Jones' father, Ernest Jones.
