TAMARAC, Fla. -- A piano teacher from Tamarac was arrested Monday by Broward Sheriff's Office sex crime detectives on suspicion of the molestation of a 7-year-old boy, according to the BSO.David Layman, 35, was charged with child molestation stemming from an incident that occurred March 18 in Weston, according to detectives.Investigators said Layman fondled the boy several times during a private piano lesson at his home. A week later, the BSO was contacted with a report of abuse after the boy told his mother what had happened during the lesson.
A family friend outside the Tamarac home where Layman lives with his wife and three young children told Local 10's Janine Stanwood that the claims are false."It's a total falsification and it's a horrible thing," said the woman, who did not want to give her name.At the Arts Academy of Hollywood, where Layman taught piano and woodwind instruments part time, many parents and students who knew him defended him."These are only accusations," said Khila Khami, whose 4-year-old daughter had taken piano lessons from Layman.Adrianna Medina, a student at the Arts Academy, said that although she never took any classes with Layman, his conduct did not seem out of the ordinary."I'm sure he wouldn't do that," said Medina.Linda Strutz, the director of the Arts Academy of Hollywood, released this written statement: "We are as shocked about these allegations regarding Mr. Layman. At the Arts Academy, we are a responsible organization that conducts thorough background checks and requires fingerprints prior to the employment of employees, volunteers and everyone that works in the building. Until we are able to fully investigate this matter within our own organization, it would be best for us not to make any comments at this time."Layman also taught music at the Imagine Charter School in Weston. This was his fourth year teaching students. His students' parents were informed Monday that a teacher had been suspended. He is charged with lewd or lascivious molestation and lewd or lascivious conduct. He is being held at the BSO's main jail without bond.Investigators said there might be additional victims. Anyone with information should contact Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
