MIAMI -- The U.S. Coast Guard crew aboard the cutter Tahoma on Monday showed off a large cocaine bust made last month in the Caribbean Sea.On June 26, 10,000 pounds of cocaine was seized from a Honduran flagged vessel named the Miss Dayanna. The street value of the drugs is estimated at $159 million. The drugs were offloaded at the Coast Guard station in Miami Beach on Monday. They will be turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration.
Lt. John Christensen told Local 10 the 120-foot vessel was boarded because of irregularities with its physical appearance. The ship had last been in Venezuela and was supposed to be transporting diesel. However, it was not configured like a vessel used to transport fuel. The ship was heading to Honduras when it was intercepted about 75 miles south of Pedro Bank, Jamaica.Once given the all clear to board the Miss Dayanna, finding the drugs was not easy. The coast guard searched for a day and a half before locating a hidden compartment inside a fuel tank. The seven Honduran nationals on the ship were turned over to U.S. drug authorities and the ship was transferred to the Honduran government.June proved to be a very busy month for cocaine smuggling in the Caribbean with more than 13,000 pounds seized in a matter of four days between U.S. and British patrols. On June 24, 14,000 pounds of cocaine were seized 65 miles west of Grenada. On June 28, 2,000 pounds were located 280 miles north of Barbados.
