17-year-old dies in shooting

Investigators say teen was walking with friend

LAUDERDALE LAKES, Fla. ā€“ A teenager died Tuesday after a shooting in Lauderdale Lakes, according to authorities.

Cornelius Mitchell, 17, was pronounced dead at Broward Health Medical Center shortly after he was transported by air from the scene of the shooting.

Broward Sheriff's Office homicide detectives said they are investigating the circumstances that led to the shooting.

Deputies said the suspect, Elijah Ellington, 32, shot Mitchell and 17-year-old Bravon Newsome of Fort Lauderdale.

According to authorities, shortly before 4 p.m., Mitchell and Newsome were walking east on 44th Street near State Road 7 while Ellington was walking west. Something sparked a dispute among the three before Ellington pulled out a handgun and opened fire on the teens, investigators said.

Newsome was was only grazed by a bullet and treated at the hospital and released.

BSO said the suspect is in custody.
