19 migrants in custody after coming ashore on Palm Beach

Border patrol suspects smuggling operation

PALM BEACH, Fla. – More than a dozen migrants were taken into custody Thursday morning after arriving on Palm Beach as part of a suspected smuggling operation.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman Frank Miller said 17 Haitians and 2 Bahamians were taken into custody.

Miller said border agents, working on a tip from Bahamian police, pursued the boat as it approached the coast. He said the migrants bailed out of the boat and tried to run off.

In the process, two migrants were injured and taken to a hospital, where they were treated and released.

Agents were interviewing the migrants in the hopes of identifying the smuggler.
