Little Haiti certainly deserves a neighborhood park. But a project proposed by Miami Commissioner Art Teele is too big, too expensive, and generating too many questions.
As Channel 10 reported last week, the project would cover about 8 blocks in the neighborhood. But it would displace 60 acres of homes and thriving businesses.
Very few city parks around South Florida are as big as the one Teele proposes. And other park projects have not brought the same displacement of people that would take place in his plan.
Nor have the other parks been as costly. The land could cost the City of Miami $75 million. Actually building the park could cost another $25 million.
And Teele didn't help matters when he apparently told El Nuevo Herald that "This park is going to be built, even if we have to set fire to the streets of Miami." Teele has a lot of explaining to do about that comment, and about this deal in general.
