LAUDERHILL, Fla. – The grandmother of a 1-year-old girl who was found floating in a pool at a home on NW 35th Court in Lauderhill rushed to be by her side Sunday afternoon.
"She's doing okay. She's breathing on her own. They just said that she's crying so I'm on my way to the hospital now," said the child's grandmother, who did not give Local 10 her name.
Lauderhill police said the child's mother was home at the time the child fell into the pool.
"Our preliminary investigation is indicating that the child may have been left unattended for a very short period of time when the mother went to another part of the house to use the restroom," said Lt. Greg Solowsky.
Solowsky said it was less than five minutes later when the mother walked outside and discovered her child in the pool.
"She quickly took the child from the pool, began CPR instantly, then she called 911," said Solowsky.
"She was crying. She was a mess. She was hanging on to one of the police officers because she was ready to sink down. She was really, really sad," said neighbor Kayla Badallo.
The good news, police said, is the child was breathing.
"When the child left this location the child was breathing very shallow, but still was breathing and showing positive signs of life," said Solowsky.
