MIAMI - Two suspects have been arrested in connection with the weekend shooting of a New York police detective in Miami Beach.
Mustafa Lee, 28, and Francisco Henriquez, 35, both of Miami, each face charges in the shooting of Detective Harold Thomas .
Miami Beach police said that on Saturday morning, Lee and Henriquez followed Thomas, a 27-year veteran of the New York Police Department, into the courtyard of a hotel where he was staying on Collins Avenue. The two men confronted Thomas with a gun and demanded money, police said.
Thomas pulled his own gun, and shots were exchanged, police said. According to investigators, Thomas and Lee were injured.
Lee and Henriquez escaped, leaving Thomas on the ground, police said. Detectives later found Lee at Broward General Hospital, where he was being treated for a gunshot wound.
Thomas was taken in critical condition to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he underwent three surgeries. Police said Thursday that Thomas is in stable condition.
Both suspects face charges of attempted felony murder and armed robbery, Miami Beach police said. Police said Henriquez was on probation at the time of the shooting.
