2 arrested after Coral Gables police officer nearly shot

Officer's car struck by bullets early Sunday morning

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Police have arrested and charged two people after a Coral Gables police officer was shot at early Sunday morning.

Coral Gables police Officer Lauren Poole said the officer who was shot at was on normal patrol at Old Cutler Road and Sierra Circle when the officer's patrol car was hit shortly before 6 a.m.

One person was taken into custody and a perimeter was set up with the help of Sweetwater police to search for others believed to be involved. One other suspect was found later and taken in as well.

Police arrested Emilio Estevez (pictured below), 25, of Coral Gables, on charges of discharging a firearm in public and use of a firearm while under the influence of alcohol.

Shyam Zaveri, 24, of Miami, was also charged with discharging a firearm in public.

"First, I would like to say that I am relieved that the officer was not injured," said Sweetwater Police Dept. Chief Jesus M. Menocal. "This was my No. 1 concern. Second, we are proud of the positive inter-agency relationship we have with the city of Coral Gables and vow to continue to serve law enforcement, the community and the public in furtherance of public safety."
