2 convicts caught after 4-car crash during high-speed chase

Men from Miami, Miami Gardens get caught in Broward

WESTON, Fla. – It was 11 a.m. on a Sunday and Tavares Lee Goldman and Ricky Brownlee weren't in church. Instead, they were up to no good in Weston, Broward Sheriff's Office deputies said.

A deputy in an unmarked car spotted Goldman, after he smashed the passenger side window of a 2013 Nissan Versa to take a tote bag. The rental car was parked at Gator Run Park, 1121 Glades Parkway, where cars had been broken into before.

Goldman, of Miami, took off in a Nissan Maxima. Brownlee, of Miami Gardens, was in the passenger side. Goldman was speeding. At times he was going at more than 100 miles per hour, deputies said.

The undercover officer radioed for back up. He followed them southbound on Interstate 75 to eastbound on Griffin Road. Marked police cars intervened during the high-speed chase.

Goldman "disregarded numerous traffic signals in a manner demonstrating a wanton disregard for the safety of persons and property," Deputy Aldemar Rengifo said in a BSO report released Wednesday.

Suddenly the Nissan Maxima crashed. There were four other vehicles involved. An 80-year-old man was injured.  Goldman, 29, and Brownlee, 41, got out of the car and took off running.

Deputies caught up to Goldman at University Drive and Taft Street. He had been driving with a suspended license and had a criminal history that included convictions for fleeing and eluding police, cocaine possession and fraud. He had marijuana in his pocket that Sunday, deputies said.

Brownlee wasn't fast enough either. Authorities learned he was a registered sex offender with a criminal history that included sexual battery, grand theft and fraud. Most recently, he had been released on a vehicle burglary -- and it wasn't his first.

Deputies recovered the tote bag, which had cash, electronics and other items valued at $1,500, according to the arrest report.

Goldman was charged with burglary, grand theft, possession of marijuana, resisting arrest, fleeing at high speed and driving with a suspended license. Brownlee was charged with burglary, grand theft and resisting arrest.

Judge John Hurley set Goldman's bond at $30,100 and Brownlee's bond at $11,000 Monday.
