DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - A small plane crashed into a field after taking off from Daytona Beach International Airport, killing a student pilot and instructor on board.

Daytona Beach Police Chief Mike Chitwood says the Cessna 172 crashed and burst into flames late Monday.

Chitwood told the Daytona Beach News-Journal that witnesses say it sounded like the plane's engine failed shortly after taking off. It crashed as it turned to head back to the runway.

Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen says a student pilot and instructor were practicing takeoffs and landings at the time of the crash.

The bodies were taken to the medical examiner's office.

The National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration are sending investigators to the scene Tuesday.
