Police have identified the man who they said killed a man in the lobby of a condominium and then turned the gun on himself.
It happened at about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Runaway Bay Condominium at 1625 SW 10th Ave.
Fort Lauderdale police said Gene Schlanger, 73, killed a 36-year-old man and then turned the gun on himself before police could intervene.
"As officers arrived on scene, they observed a white male shoot himself, and from there they went in to clear the building and the found another white male who was deceased from a gunshot," said detective Travis Mandell.
An office worker who didn't want to be identified told Local 10's Roger Lohse that Schlanger was terminally ill. She said his son's soon-to-be ex-wife came to the condo with her boyfriend to pick up money. According to a neighbor who also didn't want to be identified, they all sat down in the lobby, and that's when Schlanger pulled a gun out of an orange envelope and started shooting.
Police locked down the building and a nearby elementary school until they determined what happened. The office worker said the entire incident was caught on camera in the lobby. Police have that tape but can't yet confirm the circumstances of the bloody encounter.
The 36-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have not released his identity pending notification of next of kin.
Schlanger worked as an economic development manager for the city of Fort Lauderdale until September of last year. He was pronounced dead at Broward General Medical Center.
