MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – Two people were questioned Friday after two U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents were struck in a hit-and-run early in the morning on Collins Avenue off Espanola Way.
Miami Beach police said they have arrested one person in the case.
"I saw one person was lying on the floor and I saw another guy was holding the side of his body," one witness, Wolfky Jean said.
Police said one man is in critical condition, while the other man is listed in stable condition. Their identities have not been released, but ICE Homeland Security Investigations spokesman Nestor Yglesias said the victims were struck by the car while on duty in Miami Beach.
Several agents wearing Homeland Security tags and jackets were also spotted going in and out of Jackson Memorial Hospital after the victims were brought in.
According to Officer Ernesto Rodriguez, the two men were flagging down a taxi cab around 3 a.m. when someone driving a dark gray Mercedes E350 went over the median and hit them.
"When I walked over there, I saw he had his hands up and it wasn't moving, and you could see blood was coming from his head, like his head hit the ground real hard," Jean said.
Both victims were taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center.
"It is terrible how somebody's life could change in a few seconds," Rodriguez said. "I mean, people come into this area to have fun, to enjoy life, especially people that are from out of town, and for something like that to happen and somebody leaving the scene, that's even worse. People should take responsibility for their action."
Rodriguez said police located the Mercedes, which was missing its driver-side mirror, early in the afternoon.
