MARATHON, Fla. – Two men are under arrest after they allegedly attempted to pawn coins belonging to an employee at Joe's Pawn Shop in Marathon.

Monroe County Sheriff's deputies said the employee, Roger Hall, noticed that his truck had been broken into before he went to work on Thursday and said some old foreign coins and cash were missing from the truck.

He said Jesus Barreto, 23, and Shean Palmer, 23, entered the pawn shop at about noon that same day and tried to pawn his coins. He immediately confronted the men and called 911.

Deputies said the suspects left the shop and were found a short time later at a McDonald's restaurant.

Deputies said Barreto refused to speak with detectives, but Palmer admitted to stealing the coins and said Barreto told him that he planned to burglarize several vehicles and homes that day.

Deputies said a tablet and phone were found in Palmer's backpack which he said Barreto had given him to hold. Deputies investigating a residential burglary nearby said a table and phone were stolen from the home.

Two vehicles at a neighbor's house were also broken into overnight. Deputies said home surveillance video showed a man, wearing the same clothes as Barreto, rummaging through the victim's belongings.

Barreto is charged with burglary of an occupied structure, burglary of a conveyance, grand theft, dealing in stolen property and theft. Palmer is charged with grand theft, theft and dealing in stolen property.

Detectives said they are investigating several other overnight burglaries in the area, which could lead to more charges for Barreto and Palmer.
