2 Miami women accused of insurance fraud, identity theft

Alina Del Prado, 60, faces more than 300 felony charges

MIAMI – Two women from Miami were arrested this week for allegedly using licensed insurance representatives' licenses to conduct more than $200,000 in fraudulent insurance transactions.

The Florida Department of Financial Services' Division of Insurance Fraud began investigating Alina Del Prado, 60, and Karla Patricia Figueroa, 40, in January 2014, while they were operating Quality Insurance Agency in Hialeah.

Authorities said Del Prado submitted an insurance agency license application for the company using a licensed agent's name and license number.

According to authorities, Del Prado hired Figueroa to illegally sell automobile insurance policies.

Authorities said they located the insurance agent, whose identity was used by Del Prado and said the agent was unaware that her license number was being used by Del Prado.

The agent also said that signatures used on the fraudulently obtained policies were not her own.

Del Prado and Figueroa were held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on a combined bond of more than $1 million. Figueroa has since bonded out of jail.

Del Prado is still behind bars and faces more than 300 felony charges, including money laundering, identity fraud, grand theft and transacting insurance without an insurance license.

Figueroa faces charges of identity fraud, transacting without an insurance license and scheme to defraud.
