3 arrested in Miami International Airport voucher scam

Suspects accused of scamming aviation dept. out of $2.1 million

MIAMI – Three people in Miami have been arrested for allegedly scamming the Miami-Dade Aviation Department out of $2.1 million.

Police say Elena Iglesias worked at a Miami International Airport lounge that collected food vouchers from passengers. Airlines would write the lounge a check for the food, drinks and internet access.

Iglesias, her husband, Lazaro Iglesias, and another airport worker, Malena Rodriguez, are accused of depositing the checks into a personal bank account instead of that of the Miami-Dade Aviation Department.

Police say the money was stolen from January 2012-February 2014.

The suspects are facing multiple charges, including grand theft, money laundering and organized scheme to defraud $50,000 or more.
