Zoo Miami is welcoming a litter of four African warthog piglets to their exhibit.
The four female piglets were born April 13, and they have spent the weeks since with their mother on hand to make sure they are healthy and developing as expected, Zoo Miami's Ron Magill said.
The warthogs, wild African pigs that have upward-curving tusks and cartilaginous tissue resembling warts on the sides of their heads, could be on exhibit with their parents by Memorial Day weekend, Magill said.
Zoo Miami said the piglets are the same type of warthog as the character Pumbaa in Disney's "The Lion King" animated movie. In 1993, animators for the film visited the zoo, where animals served as models for some of the characters.
