MIAMI -- Police said there was no bomb in a U-haul that was abandoned Monday between the Miami-Dade County criminal courthouse and the state attorney's office. Police spokesman Delrish Moss said the empty truck might have been stolen because it had been hotwired. It had been rented in Liberty City about 8 a.m., but the person apparently gave a phony license number and address. Moss said police suspect the man also used a fake name.Monday morning, the truck struck a parked car as it backed across a curve. The driver jumped out and went inside the building where the state attorney's office is located. Officials said he told security guards he needed to make a delivery. He went to use the bathroom but instead ran out.
The bomb squad responded to the scene, searched the truck with a robot and found nothing unusual. A suspicious package was then spotted in the courthouse and the evacuation continued, but shortly later authorities allowed people to return to the buildings. The area was evacuated for about three hours.
