No New Trial For Teele

Commissioner Denied Second Request For New Trial

POSTED: 6:33 pm EDT April 4, 2005

A former Miami commissioner has been denied his request for a new trial for the second time since he was convicted of threatening a police officer.

Former Commissioner Arthur Teele testified in his own defense
Monday, Teele and his attorney asked for a new trial because they said the jury wrongly convicted Teele period. They claim the jury knew he was under investigation for corruption and they may have let that influence their decision because they didn't understand the law.

Teele got into an altercation with undercover police officers who were following him last August as part of the investigation. Teele was charged with threatening and assaulting an officer, but he was acquitted of the assault charge.

Monday, the judge reiterated a decision made last month to deny Teele a new trial.

He will be sentenced on May 4 for threatening the officer, and faces trial in October on corruption charges.
