5-year-old survives shooting

2 other children take into protective services

PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. – A 5-year-old boy is on the mend after surviving a shooting in Pembroke Park on Wednesday, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office.

The shooting happened at 5100 SW 41st Street.

Police were called to the apartment complex about 11 a.m. after a woman brought her son to Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital and said he was injured in a shooting.

Neighbors said they heard a single gunshot, but it's unclear who pulled the trigger or how the boy was hurt.

A neighbor said police gave her good news about the boy's recovery.

"Police officer came to my door asking questions and they told me he was getting out of surgery, that he was fine, so that's good," the woman said.

Local 10 has learned police questioned the boy's family and four people were taken into police custody. Charges are pending.

Meanwhile, two other children have been taken into protective services, authorities said.
