50-lane traffic jam causes havoc on Chinese highway

Snarl caused by millions returning home to Beijing after holiday

BEIJING, China – And you think your daily commute is long?

New images out of China show just horrific a traffic jam can actually be.

Buzzfeed shared pictures of massive gridlock on the 50-lane Beijing-Hong Kong-Macau Expressway earlier this week.

The highway, one of the busiest in the entire country, was the victim of a perfect storm of traffic mayhem.

Some blamed the foggy weather, while others say it was caused by millions of Chinese returning to Beijing after a holiday.

But the real blame was placed on the decision to open a new checkpoint on the road that merged the 50 lanes down to a measly 20.

So next time you curse the Palmetto or I-95, realize that things can always be worse.
