BSO Reminds Drivers Not To Speed In School Zones

POSTED: 9:31 am EST November 17, 2005

Hurricane Wilma was somewhat kind to residents in Miami-Dade County -- sparing many street signs and traffic signals. Even so, there are still a number of flashing school speed zone signs that need replacing. In Broward County, Fla., the situation is even worse.

One Broward Sheriff's Office deputy's sole duty Wednesday was to remind drivers on a stretch of Federal Highway in Dania Beach that it was a school zone.

Despite having crossing guards posted at many of the crippled Broward County intersections, some drivers appeared to forget that there were school zones in place before Wilma tore down many of the signs and signals.

Florida Department of Transportation officials do not know exactly how many school zone signs need to be replaced, but in an effort to keep students and drivers safe, officials said they would be installing 450 new ones throughout the affected areas.

Once those signs are replaced, BSO officials said they would be ticketing drivers who continue to violate traffic laws.

For example, driving one mile over the posted speed limit in a school zone will cost violators $105; 10-14 mph over the posted limit will cost $255.50; and 15-19 mph over will cost $305.50.

BSO has been giving drivers the benefit of the doubt by issuing warnings to violators, but authorities said not to expect the same courtesy again.
