JUPITER, Fla. -

A 6-year-old boy was bitten by a shark off of Jupiter Beach on Tuesday evening.

Jupiter police said the boy was in the water with his father when a shark bit his upper thigh.

He was flown by helicopter to St. Mary's Medical Center and was listed in serious condition. Doctors said the boy was expected to recover.

A church group was swimming just a short distance down the beach when the attack happened. They said they heard the Trauma Hawk helicopter landing and walked over to see what was going on.

"We couldn't really tell where he was bit. When you see the blood, you kind of look away," Wendy Occean said.

Another member of the church group, who did not want to be identified, said she saw the shark about 100 yards off of the shore. She said that was right before she heard about the attack.
