60 guns turned in at gun buyback event

Those that turned in firearms were eligible for Target gift cards

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Sixty guns were turned in at a gun buyback event held Saturday in Fort Lauderdale.

The Fort Lauderdale Police Department, in conjunction with the Broward Sheriff's Office, New Mount Olive Development Corporation and the New Mount Olive Baptist Church, hosted the gun buyback event on the New Mount Olive Baptist Church grounds.

The focus of the event was to enhance public safety by removing unwanted or unsecured firearms from the community.

Those that were interested in turning in a firearm were able to do so without questions being asked, police said.

Depending on the condition of the firearm, individuals who participated in the gun buyback received a monetary amount between $25 and $100 in Target gift cards.

Small pistols (.22 to .38 caliber) that were turned in were awarded around $25, while long guns such as shotguns and rifles could have received $100.
