8 students sickened after taking pills at Sawgrass Springs Middle School

Students take diabetic medication

CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. – Six middle school students in Coral Springs were taken to the hospital after another student gave them pills Wednesday afternoon, Coral Springs Fire Department officials said.

Authorities said the children took the diabetic medication, glipizide, at Sawgrass Springs Middle School.

Two other students were evaluated on the school campus.

A student at the school told Local 10 News that the incident involved a group of girls. She said at least one of the girls couldn't walk and was acting erratically after taking the medication.

Side effects of the drug include nausea and dizziness.

Poison control said the medication requires 24-hour monitoring.

School officials said they were questioning the student who brought the pills.
