Coast Guard says passengers found wearing lifejackets in water

MIAMI – Nine people were rescued Sunday after their boat capsized about 18 miles southwest of Key West around 1:30 p.m.

The U.S. Coast Guard received a distress call from passengers on a 25-foot sports craft vessel that had no GPS.

A Coast Guard crew was able to locate the boat.

By the time the Coast Guard arrived, all nine people were found in the water wearing their lifejackets.

All of the passengers of the boat were rescued. One person was treated by paramedics for a cut on his leg upon arriving in Key West.

"The Coast Guard urges boaters to always wear lifejackets while underway," Petty Officer 1st Class Christopher Perkins said. "By having a marine radio and lifejackets onboard, the vessel operator's preparedness contributed to the success of the response."
