911 call reporting woman missing released
Lawyer: Suggestion that man's statement is admission is 'utterly preposterous'
A 911 call in which a man reports a Miramar mother of three missing was released by police Tuesday.
Vilet Torrez, 37, was last seen on the evening of March 30. Her estranged husband, Cid Torrez, called 911 Monday to report her missing.
LISTEN: 911 call
Cid Torrez has been named a person of interest his wife's disappearance, but Miramar police have not said why. He has not been charged with any crime.
In the 911 call, Cid Torrez explained to the dispatcher that Vilet Torrez was missing. When asked how long she had been missing, Cid Torrez said, "I don't know. Saturday, she wasn't here, all right? And, Friday, (unintelligible) Saturday morning or Friday night, she didn't come to sleep, and then I don't know about Saturday, and now Sunday, I definitely did it, so."
"You did what?" the dispatcher asked.
"I mean, it was 1 o'clock and she didn't show up, either," the caller said.
"OK, so she's been missing since Friday?" the dispatcher asked.
"Yes, I guess," the caller said.
The missing woman's husband went on to describe the last time he saw Vilet Torrez.
"On Friday, mostly, she was going to go to work, but I don't know what happened from there. Friday, we came back at nighttime, at midnight, and she never came back. We called. She didn't answer. And then, I left Saturday, and then Sunday, she didn't show up yesterday, either," he said. "I sent her a couple of text messages, but she hasn't answered. Now, her voicemail is already full."
He continued to say that, "I told her mother, and her mother said that she's not there, either."
Cid Torrez's attorney released a statement Tuesday afternoon about the call, specifically referring to Cid Torrez's statement that he "definitely did it."
"What we are hearing is a distraught man calling 911 to report that his wife did not come home over the weekend," the lawyer's statement said. "Cid Torrez tried calling and texting his wife, Vilet, numerous times over the weekend. On Sunday evening, April 1, 2012, Cid attempted to reach Vilet several times between 7:00 pm and 12:00 am. Around 1:00 am, he called Vilet’s mother for the first time to explain that he had not heard from Vilet all weekend. This was a call he did not want to have to make. In listening to the 911 call, it is clear that Cid was recounting for himself and the officer his efforts to piece together the whereabouts of Vilet for the prior few days and what he had been doing to locate her. His comments were a reflection of his calls on Sunday to Vilet and to her mother and the fact that they were made. As a result, his specific statement 'on Sunday I definitely did it' refers to his calling Vilet’s mother. Any suggestion that this statement is an admission of some sort is utterly preposterous."
The search continues for Vilet Torrez.
