911 calls in fatal truck crash released

1 killed when Tracy Bakery delivery truck crashes at I-95, SR 84

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Police released 911 calls made about a bakery delivery truck that hung over an Interstate 95 ramp after crashing in to a cement wall.

A passenger inside the truck, who hasn't been identified, was killed when the truck crashed on the westbound ramp to I-95 on State Road 84 about 5:25 a.m. Wednesday.

The driver, 43-year-old Buenaventura Fernandez, was treated at Broward Health Medical Center.

"I'm up here by 95 on 84 on the overpass. A truck has hit the center and it's hanging halfway off," a shaken motorist told the dispatcher. "It's actually hanging half off the bridge. It hit a column."

That man was one of several drivers who dialed the emergency hotline, their voices filled with urgency, shock, and concern.

"Anybody trapped in the vehicle?," the dispatcher asked one motorist who came upon the crash.

"Yes, both of them are in the vehicle," said the caller.

The dispatcher followed up, asking "Was anybody thrown from the vehicle?

"No," said the driver, "they're both still in the vehicle."

"There's a passenger and the guy keeps saying the guy's dead but I don't know if he is or not. He's hanging off the side," said another caller.

A representative from Tracy Bakery confirmed that it was one of the company's trucks. She said the two people who were in the truck were making deliveries in Broward County.

Repairs to the 10-foot hole in the barrier wall were postponed Thursday after inspectors with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection discovered fuel and hydraulic fluid leaked from the truck.
