Man Accused Of Playing Rap On Country Station

Aspiring DJ Told Detectives He Always Wanted To Be On Air

POSTED: 8:15 am EDT September 22, 2006

Broward Sheriff’s Office detectives have arrested the operator of a pirate radio station broadcasting urban rap music to country music fans.

For several weeks, listeners tuned to WKIS-FM, also known as Kiss Country, might have heard rap music on their radios. That's because, according to detectives, a pirate radio station was interfering with the legitimate station’s signal.

WKIS engineers tracked the pirate signal to the Okomo trailer park on Taft Street and contacted the BSO. Detectives went to the trailer park Wednesday and found a 30-foot-tall broadcasting antenna outside the trailer at 17 Loop Road.

The owner of the trailer, Darin Satter, was arrested and charged with unauthorized transmission/interference with a public radio station. State law prohibits interference with a licensed station.

If convicted, Satter, 34, could spend up to five years in prison and be required to pay a $5,000 fine.

Detectives said Satter told them he is an aspiring disc jockey who always wanted to be on the airwaves.
