As a cardinal, the man now known as Pope Francis was known for taking public transportation and working in the poor neighborhoods in Argentina. Argentinians who encountered Cardinal Jorge Bergolgio say he was well known in Buenos Aires’ poor neighborhoods.

<b>--LEAD IN</b>--</p><p>Pope Francis is likely to make his next public appearance on Sunday at St. Peter's Basilica</p><p>On Thursday -- during his first full day as pope--</p><p>Francis prayed and celebrated mass.</p><p>But he also paid his hotel bill, packed up his bags, and rode the bus instead of a limo.</p><p>that has many catholics wondering if he's planning to put more cracks in the papal mold.</p><p>Francis is well-respected for his austerity and simplicity.</p><p>And he was known for washing the feet of the poor, when he was a cardinal.</p><p>Fore more on the humble lifestyle the pope led as a Cardinal in Argentina--</p><p>C-N-N's Shasta Darlington takes us for a bus ride in Buenos Aires. </p><br /><br /><br /><p>

We're going to head to Villa 21-24."</p><p>THE BUS DRIVER SAYS HE'S HEARD ABOUT THE AUSTERE CARDINAL WHO WOULD TAKE A SEAT IN HIS SIMPLE BLACK SHIRT AND PRIEST'S COLLAR.</p><p>"The man who is now Pope Francis was a champion of the poor but he also lived the life. When he was named archbishop in Buenos aires he refused to go live in the official residence, he stayed in his small apartment. And the same goes for the limo and driver. He preferred public transportation and this is the bus he continued to take even after he became archbishop to celebrate mass in this shantytown." </p><p>WE ASKED PASSENGERS IF THEY HAD EVER MET CARDINAL BERGOGLIO, THREE PEOPLE RIGHT AWAY SAID YES.</p><p>THIS WOMAN SAID SHE WAS CONFIRMED BY HIM. </p><p>AND THIS MAN SAID THAT THEY SAT TOGETHER AT SAN LORENZO FOOTBALL MATCHES - CARDINAL BERGOGLIO'S FAVORITE TEAM</p><p>HE WAS A FAN, BUT NOT OVEREXCITED, HE SAYS</p><p>THE BUS LETS US OFF IN THE HEART OF THE VILLA, SLANG FOR SLUM HERE IN BUENOS AIRES.</p><p>ON THE WAY TO THE LOCAL CHURCH, WE FIND TWO PARISHIONERS WHO KNEW FATHER JORGE WELL.</p><p>FELIX RUIZ DIAZ SAYS HE WAS BLESSED TO HAVE THE ARCHBISHOP WASH HIS FEET ON TWO DIFFERENT OCCASIONS </p><p>AND GETS EMOTIONAL WHEN WE ASK ABOUT THE NEW POPE.</p><p>"we're now right in the heart of villa 21-24, this is really a dirt-poor neighborhood, I don't know how else to say it, right up here is the parish church where Cardinal Bergoglio gave mass, and he's just extremely loved here, everyone tells us what a humble man he was, how arrived in bus, and how he walked the last five blocks to the church." </p><p>FATHER LORENZO DE VEDIA SHOWS US AROUND THE CHURCH WITH ITS WOODEN BENCHES AND PAINTED PLASTER WALLS.</p><p>HE SAYS CARDENAL BERGOGLIO WAS A FERVENT SUPPORTER OF SENDING MORE PRIESTS INTO THE VILLAS.</p><p>HERE, PEOPLE TAKE PERSONAL PRIDE IN THE NEW POPE FRANCIS.</p><p>BUT THEY STILL HOPE TO SEE HIM ONE DAY STROLL UP THE DUSTY STREET FROM THE NO. 70 BUS STOP.</p><p>SHASTA DARLINGTON CNN BUENOS AIRES</p><br /><p>
